The model for the two etchings (008, 009) was a work with the same title that Zorn had already created at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. Zorn had submitted the ink wash on wrapping paper to the annual exhibition of academy students in 1880. "In Mourning" was a great success there, which is why the artist subsequently created and sold numerous similarly designed pictures (see below).

The sitter is Miss Mimmi Nystrand. She was the daughter of Zorn's landlady in Stockholm (1880).
